Explain the Powder Coating Process
You may know what powder coating is – a dry finishing technique for coating metal surfaces – but what does the process actually entail?
Is There Anything Borotek Can’t Powder Coat?
Most metals can be powder coated, but there are a few materials that we don’t work with, as powder coating them won’t yield the best results. We do not offer powder coating services for cast aluminum, copper, or bronze due to the unique properties of these materials, which can either complicate the process or result in less-than-ideal finishes.
What would happen if these materials were powder coated?
Cast aluminum is more prone to develop air pockets, which will then expand or create bubbles when heated in a high-temp curing oven. This results in an uneven finish and surface irregularities – definitely not the results we want.
Copper and bronze have oxidizing properties – in other words, they form a natural patina over time. This makes the material less likely to adhere to the power coating, even with proper surface preparation. What will result is a less strong bond, as well as an increased risk for dulling and imperfections down the line.
